Underwater Photography at PMA 2009
March 3rd, 2009 by David Aamodt
LAS VEGAS - While the weather isn’t particularly harsh in Las Vegas this time of year, one thing that’s always totally lacking is water. Between the biting winter in the rest of the country and the dry desert air in Vegas, it’s pretty easy to get caught up in tropical vacation daydreams in February and March. So before I drift off into visions of Puerta Vallarta, Belize or the Seychelles, check out these pics of some of PMA 2009’s marine photography equipment. From a snorkeler mask with camera to the waterproof Sanyo camcorder, these gadgets will be able to go along on any aquatic adventures.
Liquid Image Explorer 302 mask is for the casual snorkeler. It is waterproof at a depth of up to 15 feet, captures photos at 5 megapixels, and for the odd hammerhead shark, moray eel or even octopus, captures video at 20 fps.

For the seasoned scuba veteran, the Pro HD350 is Liquid Image’s top-end option. This scuba accessory might look like something from the set of a sci-fi flick, but it manages to cram a full HD camera into a scuba mask with a mobile lighting studio to boot. It captures still images at 5 megapixels and records 720p video at 30 fps. The Pro HD350 can join a serious scuba diver on most expeditions, as it is waterproof at up to 330 feet deep. At that depth, who knows what creatures are lurking?

From Sanyo, we got a glimpse of their waterproof camcorder Xacti E1. It records video with a 5x optical zoom, takes 6 megapixel stills, and is waterproof down to 5 feet.

The marine pack for the Sony CyberShot DSC-T900 will be available in March and will let you take your trusted compact camera down to 132 feet underwater.

This rather bizarre looking housing will allow you to take your camcorder up to 17 feet down. It’s available now and runs $250. Notice the clever use of a mirror in place of the LCD display.
All these photos kinda make me want to throw on a tank top, put on some Jimmy Buffet and head South as fast as my rusting car can carry me. How about you? But I won’t, because we still have more to bring you from PMA. |
